In 1896, the Supreme Court case of Plessy v Ferguson indirectly took away rights from blacks. This decision allowed segregation to continue for many years despite the Court’s responsibility to make the right decision without bias. The decision also demoted blacks to second-class citizens mentally and physically. It was a landmark case and has been controversial throughout history.
