African Americans experienced an increase of rights after the civil war in the period known as Reconstruction. At the end of Reconstruction they saw those rights limited and taken away. They were often exposed to disenfranchisement, lynching, and Jim Crow Laws. By the 1890s informal separation of blacks and whites had turned into state-level legal codes known as Jim Crow Laws.
